Design Journey

Design Methodology

Our core methodology revolves around Karen Holtzblatt's Rapid Contextual Design, a user-centric design approach that focuses on evaluating existing workflows and identifying key areas for improvement. We also adopted several design techniques from SUTD's SUTD-MIT International Design Centre, such as the Activity Diagram, C-Sketch and User Journey Map tools.

Literature

Our team also enriched our design process by conducting a literature review on the MRO landscape through Anant Sahay's Leveraging Information Technology for Optimal Aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul. On top of this, we adopted Mica Endsley's Situation Awareness framework to further refine our front-end design to facilitate fast and intuitive information retrieval.

Testing

Throughout the entire process, we made sure to test our ideas for robustness. Our team used a variety of platforms ranging from Figma to Maze, where we created high fidelity prototypes to perform both Simulation Studies and Usability Testing. The insights obtained from each stage were used to inform each iteration created, leading to the version that you see here today.

Collins Aerospace is a leader in providing technologically advanced solutions for the global aerospace and defence industry. It also provides Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul or MRO services to many renowned clients. In 2020, Collins unveiled its Singapore Innovation Hub in efforts to digitally transform MRO operations. With a variety of issues identified, the team from the Singapore Innovation Hub approached SUTD last May to collaborate in creating innovative solutions for its MRO information retrieval workflows.
